Psalm 107- The Lord is Good!

 

Opening Discussion Question:  Not everyone’s testimony is the same.  It is often fascinating to hear all of the different ways that God calls people out of darkness and into the light.  Take a few minutes to consider your own testimony:  did God rescue you from despair? Discouragement? Anger? Folly? Helplessness? Rebellion?  All of the above?  Discuss in groups or with the whole class your testimony of what God brought you out of when he saved you.

 

  1. Verses 1-3 remind us that God is good.  Is this simple truth sometimes overlooked?  Why might a skeptic or unbeliever have a hard time accepting this simple truth?

 

  1.  What picture do verses 1-3 give us about the common thread that binds all of God’s people together?

 

  1.  Verses 4-43 provide us pictures of the various ways that God intervenes on behalf of those who call on Him.  It can be instructive to consider how each picture captures an aspect of God’s saving work.  Briefly list the various situations humans find themselves in in this passage.

 

  1.  Verses 4-9 describe a wanderer.  How is this an apt description of some people’s spiritual condition?  How does God deliver them?

 

  1.  Verses 10-16 describe a prisoner, sitting in chains?  How is this an apt description of some people’s spiritual condition?  How does God deliver them?

 

  1.  Verses 17-22 describe fools bent on rebellion who “suffered affliction because of their iniquities.”  How is this an important and powerful commentary about sin?

 

  1.  Verses 23-32 depict merchants who are unable to conduct their business.  How does this picture help us see the dangers of pride?  

 

  1.  The final verses speak to the the wonders of transformation that come through God’s salvation.  How do they depict the beauty of the gospel? In what ways should these verses provide us with motivation to minister to the lost?
